Scintillating solo or dynamic duo?

Now that I’ve been living on my own for a little over two months, and my swingin’ bachelor pad is pretty much in the shape I want it in, I thought it might be enlightening to dwell for a moment on the topic of roommates. When I first decided to move to the Windy City, I elected not to enlist the company of a cohabiter, partly because I wanted to go it solo for a while and also because I didn’t know of anyone else moving to the city at the time. During these two months I’ve had a variety of friends stay with me, and have noticed various pros and cons to the roommate situation.

The one giant obvious plus side to living alone is being beholden to no man, woman or beast. I get to do whatever I want, eat whatever I want and wear whatever I want — or in some cases, nothing at all (I’ve also discovered there’s a great view of my television from my bathroom).

But the sword swings both ways. In terms of eating, cooking becomes slightly more difficult because, by cooking’s nature, it is usually meant to satisfy more than one person (unless that one person doesn’t mind having the same helping of microwaved casserole Tuesday through Saturday). I’ve indulged in some cooking, but I would much rather sample more of the fabulous restaurants in the neighborhood (or, on one occasion, walk a mile in the 90-degree heat to satiate my Taco Bell craving).

Having a roommate usually (and hopefully) means you have a de facto friend. As a fairly social person, I find that most activities, no matter how trivial, are more enjoyable when you have someone to share them with. It’s also nice to be able to have someone to assist in cleaning and straightening out the apartment (I may be confusing this concept with that of a wife or domestic manservant — I still haven’t figured that out yet).

Not having a roommate also allows you to be more spontaneous. Like today, for example, when after watching some TV and eating some lunch, I decided to hop on the bike trail and find a nice shady spot near the Lincoln Park lagoons and do some blogging and catching up on emails on a hot summer Chicago day. I’ve watched a small gaggle of geese cross my path picking out grubs in the grass and am catching an amazing breeze off Lake Michigan under a cloudless blue sky.

Having a roommate might be nice, but not even the view from my bathroom could top this scene.
